Reforming Juvenile Justice: National Report and How It Can Inform Your Work
Monday, March 4, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. EST. Pre-registration is required, please click here.
Join CJJ for a presentation by Betty M. Chemers and Richard J. Bonnie about their recently released, Reforming Juvenile Justice: A Developmental Approach, from the National Research Council at the National Academies Press. Chemers and Bonnie will highlight the report’s findings including current research on adolescence and implications for juvenile justice policy and practice reforms at the federal, state, and local levels. Four major recommendations from the NRC report will provide the framework for the discussion:
- Establish bipartisan, multi-stakeholder task forces to design and oversee a long-term process of juvenile justice reform;
- Strengthen the role of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP);
- Support research that “advance [s] the science of adolescent development and expands our understanding of the ways in which developmental processes influence juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice responses;” and
- Develop a data improvement program on juvenile crime and juvenile justice system processing to provide greater insight into state, tribal and local variations.
Marie Williams (CJJ) will also join Chemers and Bonnie to discuss ways to effectively use the report and its findings in support of national, state and local juvenile justice reform. We will focus specifically on multi-stakeholder groups and how SAGs can be part of such efforts, as well as reform strategies including those relevant to reducing racial and ethnic disparities.
A recorded version of this webinar will be available after the session.
We hope you can join us!
