Spirit of Youth Award: 2005: Antoine Perry

Antoine Perry, who hales from San Francisco, California, turned his life around after spending time in the juvenile justice system. He now channels his experience to help prevent others from following the path he did.

Faced with tremendous challenges within his family of origin and with few external supports, Mr. Perry looked to music, sports, writing and, ultimately, to religion for solstice. He is now an example to San Francisco youth and his community.

Through a genuine "gift of gab" and street credibility, he can reach even the most at-risk youth. Mr. Perry has counseled homicide survivors and wards of the court. He has organized rallies for violence prevention, managed basketball camps, and created a music studio. Most significantly, he turned his life around, accepted God, became a husband and parent, and opened his heart and home to a younger brother caught in the foster care system.
